Hi everyone,
I am working on a SharePoint restructuring project and need some advice regarding migrating a subsite into a top-level site collection.
Currently, we have a SharePoint subsite that has grown significantly over time. It contains multiple document libraries, lists, metadata, permissions, workflows, and a lot of business-critical data. The plan is to move this subsite into its own top-level site because we want better governance, easier administration, and a cleaner SharePoint architecture.
The challenge is that SharePoint does not provide a simple “convert subsite to top-level site” option. A manual migration approach can become complicated because we need to maintain:
- Document libraries and folder structures
- Metadata and columns
- User permissions
- Version history
- Lists and attachments
- Site settings and configurations
I have seen people suggest rebuilding everything manually, but for a large subsite, that seems risky and extremely time-consuming. There is always a possibility of missing permissions, losing metadata, or affecting user access.
Has anyone handled a similar SharePoint migration?
One option I am considering is using a third-party migration tool like
Shoviv SharePoint Migration Tool
. From what I understand, it is designed to help migrate SharePoint data while preserving important elements such as documents, libraries, lists, permissions, and metadata. This seems more practical than copying everything manually, especially for enterprise environments where data accuracy is important.
My main concerns are:
1. Does the migration process preserve SharePoint permissions correctly?
2. Can the tool handle large subsites with thousands of files?
3. Is version history migrated successfully?
4. Are there any limitations when moving from a subsite structure to a top-level site?
I know every environment is different, but I would appreciate feedback from anyone who has performed a similar migration.
For organizations dealing with older SharePoint architectures, moving subsites into modern site structures seems like a common requirement. I'm trying to find the safest approach that minimizes downtime and avoids rebuilding years of data manually.
Would love to hear your experiences, recommendations, or lessons learned.

Space planning can significantly affect how comfortable a home feels. Buyers examining the
Kallang Avenue Residences Floor Plan
Floor Plan should think about furniture placement, household movement, storage, and how each room would actually be used.
