I would like to use this as a module for eGroupWare ( sourceforge.net/projects/egroupware/ or www.egroupware.org) since it's perfect for the function I'm looking for. Any plans in development for this?

I'm sorry, that we do not have free resources to work on this. You can ask guys from eGroupWare to integrate this into or do such integration by yourself.
phpWebFileManager should be easy to integrate in the similar way how is PostNuke integration done.
